He married Elizabeth Mathis Abt. 1839, daughter of William H. Mathis.  She was born 1815 in North Carolina, and died Bef. 1860.Marriage Notes for Leroy Farmer and Elizabeth Mathis:Leroy Berry and Elizabeth Mathis were the parents of six children. The 1860 census of Richmond County, NC indicates that he was 47 years old at that time.  The census does not list Elizabeth, but it does indicate that Thomas, their youngest was 8 years old.     I believe that Leroy Farmer died sometime after the 1860 census.  He is not listed on the 1870 census.  His wife Elizabeth is not listed on the 1860 census.  I believe that she died sometime after 1852.  Their youngest child was born in 1852.  Their son, James Whitman, stated that both parents died from typhoid.  She is not listed on the 1860 census, she probably died before the census was taken that year.  He is listed in 1860 but not on 1870.  He could have died in 1860 after the census was taken. The Richmond County marriage records show a marriage bond, dated May 11, 1868 for Robert H. Farmer, son Leroy C. She was born July 29, 1859 in Lilesville/Anson County, NC, and died August 18, 1926.Notes for James Whitman Farmer:James Whitman and Mary Elizabeth Gale Farmer are buried in the Caledonia Methodist Church Cemetery near Maxton, NC.  James lived most of his life in Richmond County and Scotland, County, NC.  They joined the Methodist church in early childhood.  The 1850 census of North Carolina lists his age as 6 months.  In 1860 his age is listed as 10.  The 1870 census shows him living in the home of Calvin Mathis.  The 1880 census shows him as a head of household living in the Wolf Pit District of North Carolina with his wife, Mary, age 21 and children, John, age 5; James, age 4, Augusta, age 1.  Also living in his house was Mrs. Nancy Bass, age 80, widow. Nancy Bass was his aunt.     James Whitman and Mary Elizabeth Gale Farmer had 16 children, only eleven lived to adulthood.  The inscription on his tombstone reads, "Twas hard to give thee up, but the will of God be done." "The Farmer Clan, consisting of the descendents of James Whitman and Mary Elizabeth (Gale) Farmer, meet annually on Thanksgiving Day at the Hamlet American Legion Building.  The first reunion was held at the home of Mrs. Annie Farmer Stanton in November, 1932, with 38 of the 113 members present.  Thus, the Farmer Clan was organized, with Belton G. Farmer being elected the first President, the position he held until his death in 1965.  Calvin M. Farmer, the youngest brother, was elected and served until his death in 1968.  James William, son of Belton, now serves as President.  Approximately 150 of the now 600 family membership attend the reunion each year.     Generations have spread all over America.  For many years, we met at various homes - until we became too numerous, then we moved to the American Legion hut hear Pinehurst and in 1980 back to Richmond County where the family originated.     The homeplace was near Diggs in the Watson Community south of Cordova.  The parents of James Whitman were Leroy C. Berry and Elizabeth Mathis Farmer, shown in the September 4, 1850 census. They lived "across the creek" from the Whitlock family.  Leroy and Elizabeth died from typhoid fever about 1861; their burial place is unknown to date.  Other children were William H., Charlotte, Robert Hataway, Joseph Calvin, and Thomas Kendrick.  William served with Company K, 33rd Regiment, NC troops (Infantry 1862).  Robert served with Company H, 2nd NC (Artilery 1864/65).  Upon his discharge at Wilmington, NC, Robert walked back to Diggs, finding only one potato to eat on the way home.  After his marriage to Mary Skipper, Robert and family moved to Red Springs - after 1870.     The parents of Mary Elizabeth were Thomas L. and Frances Covington Gale of Lilesville.  At age 37, Thomas enlisted with the Confederacy on February 25, 1863, and served as a nurse.  Captured at Gettysburg July 5, 1863, he died in the Union hospital at Harrisonburg, Virginia in November 1864.  His gravesite was recently located there.  Thomas' parents were William C. Gale from Exeter, New Hampshire and Catherine Asson of Cheraw, SC.  Union troops advanced from Cheraw March 7, 1865, directly by the Farmer homeplace.  James (Jim) Whitman, age 16, and Thomas K., age 13, watched as a gun was broken against the chimney.  As the stock flew off, T.K.'s leg was broken and was set by an officer.  Two troops hid a cow so the boys would have milk to survive.  During the desolate post-war years, and living with their Uncle Calvin Mathis, they trapped quail and rabbit to eat.  While hunting turkey near the Pee Dee River, someone  killed a panther.  All became very ill after it was coooked and eaten.     Eventually, "T.K." married Susan Ella Gale.  Her young sister, Mary Elizabeth (Mollie), traveled by train to visit from Lilesville to Marks Station.  Jim rode the buggy with them, and consequently, Mollie never returned to live in Lilesville.  They were married on December 7, 1873 and to them sixteen children were born.  Eleven lived to be grown and married; most with many children of their own.  To Jim and Mollie this history is dedicated.     Jim operated a ferry in the Diggs area and drove an overland freight wagon;  this was before he moved his family to Scotland County about 1903.  T.K. was already residing near Laurel Hill; but about fifteen years later many of both families returned to Richmond (County).  Their descendents, as well as those of brother Robert, carry on the tradition of reuniting in our homeland, a deep caring which began over sixty-two years ago...on a very special Thanksgiving day."
