The 1860 census shows him as owning more than $6,000 worthof real
and personal property.

A descendant has a copy of the obituary of Gideon'sdaughter, Martha's.
It said that he was a very wealthy man and a gentleman. Italso mentions
that he was the owner of more than 20 slaves and that afterthe war
between the states he lost most of everything he had. He wasa supporter
of the Confederacy and Union soldiers more than likelyrobbed his home.
By 1870 Gideon was the owner of more than 1,000 acres ofland.

trustee, was accused of spending their mother's money heldin trust from
her father's estate on himself and not for the support,maintenance and
education of his mother and younger siblings, who wereilliterate.
