They got into a fist fight, some thought it best to break it up , others said let them fight it out. Butler would not let the matter drop and finally Lee Riley cut Butler's throat severing a major vein. Attempts to reconnect the vein were unsuccessful -they could not get the ends to come together, Sent to Louisville for a doctor but Butler died before the doctor arrived.Lee Hiatt was set loose scott free. William Henry Turner wittnessed the altercation. He was buried in Peter Cem. He has reference number SHEWB48. He was a farmer. Grandpa was "churched" for dancing. Frank Hall was a merchant in Mackville and more or less ran the town politically. He had a big say in the Baptist Church and had Grandpa Shewmaker "churched" (expelled from the church).---per Byron Arnold. He was. W.W. was a very hard worker. Many times he would not stop plowing a field to eat. His wife would walk along the furrow and feed him his lunch as he continued to plow.

Will W. Shewmaker was taking a wagon load of hay through Mackville (probably before his marriage) His horses spooked and began to run away, rounding a corner and headed towards Willisburg--the hay shifted and slid off with W.W. underneath. A lady in whose front yard the hay spilled came running out and started to dig him out along with other men who came running behind the wagon from town. He was almost smothered. The lady went into her house to get a glass of water and water to wash his face. She said it was a miracle he survived and didn't see how he made it out alive. Woll said, "If I wasn't a Shewmaker I wouldn't have". This became a popular saying around the community. Will and Ida went to house-keeping on a farm outside of Mackville, Ky. Their sons, Henry Butler and Marvin K., were born while living at this location. A log home was purchased in the central part of Washington Co. in an area known as Pleasant Grove (now the site of Wesley Shewmaker's home).
On moving day a wagon was loaded with furniture and Ida drove the team while holding Marvin on her lap. Henry Butler was big enough to stand beside his mother while she drove. Will followed behind the wagon on a horse. The remaining children ( Ersley, Arene, Laura Antonette, Beulah, Stanley, Watson and Ida B.) were born at this location. Will and Ida were hard working. Often Ida would walk beside Will plowing in the fields and feed him his lunch. Will not wanting too take time to rest. Henry Butler spent a lot of time staying with and visiting his Hilton Grandparents in Mackville. All the children attended the Pleasant Grove one room school (still standing today as the Pleasant Grove Community Center) through the eighth grade. Some of the children went on to high school in Springfield. Ersley, Arene, Beulah and Stanley graduated from this school. Arene remembers going to school when the snow was up to the hub of the wheel on the buggy. The family moved again to an adjoining farm (Marvin owns today) when Ida B. was five years old. They sold this farm to Marvin Shewmaker in 1929 for a price of $7,750 for 150 acres. Will Shewmaker bought a farm off the Willisburg road for $150 per acre for 160 acres in 1930. Ida B. remembered the house being infested with bed bugs. They placed the legs of their beds in cans containing kerosene to prevent the bugs
from getting in the beds. It took a lot of hard work washing the room down in kerosene to finally get rid of the bugs. This farm was later sold to Watson Shewmaker. Will Shewmaker died from
leukemia 6 Oct. 1934 at his home at Pleasant Grove. Parents: William Oliver BUTLER SHEWMAKER and Martha "Mattie" Burella CROOKE.
